Human life span stopped increasing: why?

L A Gavrilov, N S Gavrilova, V N Nosov

    Summary

Human lifespan increase has plateaued due to a biological limit. Declining mortality is solely from age-independent factors, now near zero, exhausting conventional life extension strategies.

    Area of Science:

    • Demography
    • Gerontology
    • Biostatistics

    Background:

    • Developed countries have observed a cessation in the increase of human lifespan.
    • Understanding the drivers of mortality is crucial for public health and longevity research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the reasons behind the plateau in human lifespan increase.
    • To analyze mortality dynamics in Sweden from 1901 to 1978.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of Swedish vital statistics from 1901-1978.
    • Modeling age-related mortality as a sum of age-independent and age-dependent components.

    Main Results:

    • Age-dependent mortality has remained historically stable.
    • The decrease in overall mortality is attributable to age-independent mortality, which is approaching its limit.
    • Evidence suggests a biological limit to average lifespan.

    Conclusions:

    • Conventional methods for mortality reduction have reached their limits.
    • Further increases in average lifespan may require novel approaches beyond current demographic and medical strategies.
