    Sawmill workers exposed to terpenes experienced increased respiratory symptoms and stable lung function impairment, characterized by obstructive changes. This impairment did not worsen with longer employment duration.

    Background:

    • Sawmill workers are potentially exposed to airborne terpenes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of terpene exposure on respiratory symptoms and lung function in sawmill workers.
    • To determine if lung function impairment progresses with duration of employment.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 48 terpene-exposed and 47 unexposed sawmill workers.
    • Assessed respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function using spirometry and single breath nitrogen washout.
    • Measured lung function before and after industrial exposure and correlated with employment duration.

    Main Results:

    • Exposed workers reported significantly more dyspnoea and chest oppression.
    • Reduced Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1) and increased closing volume (CV%) and alveolar plateau slope were observed in exposed workers.
    • No correlation found between duration of employment and lung function impairment.

    Conclusions:

    • Terpene exposure in sawmills is associated with mild, stable lung function impairment of an obstructive nature.
    • Lung function impairment in this cohort did not appear to worsen with increased duration of employment.
