    Summary

    New echocardiogram methods detect early doxorubicin cardiotoxicity in children. These sensitive indicators identify myocardial fibrosis before changes in standard shortening fraction (delta S) are apparent.

    Background:

    • Doxorubicin is a common chemotherapy agent used in pediatric cancer treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate novel echocardiographic methods for detecting myocardial fibrosis in children treated with doxorubicin.

    • Slowed relaxation and contraction deficits often occurred together, particularly in the posterior wall.

    Conclusions:

    • M-mode and 2D echocardiographic evaluations of LVPW relaxation and contraction are more sensitive than delta S for detecting early doxorubicin cardiotoxicity.
    • These advanced echocardiographic techniques can identify myocardial fibrosis in pediatric patients before standard measures show abnormalities.
    • This facilitates earlier intervention and management of doxorubicin-induced cardiac damage.
