Variation in left ventricular ejection fraction determination at rest and during exercise.

A van Aswegen, C P Herbst, M G Lötter

    Summary

Multi-gated blood pool imaging (MBPI) reliably determines left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). This study found minimal observer and interstudy variance, confirming MBPI

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Diagnostic Imaging

    Background:

    • Accurate assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is crucial for diagnosing and managing cardiovascular diseases.
    • Multi-gated blood pool imaging (MBPI) is a common technique for LVEF determination, but its reliability requires validation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate observer variance and interstudy variance in LVEF measurements using MBPI.
    • To assess the reproducibility of MBPI for LVEF determination at rest and during exercise.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 48 MBPI studies (23 rest, 37 exercise) in 48 patients.
    • Two independent observers analyzed studies to determine intra- and inter-observer variance.
    • MBPI was repeated in 15 patients at rest to assess interstudy variance.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Excellent intra-observer correlation for LVEF between rest and exercise studies (r=0.998 rest, r=0.964 exercise).
    • Excellent inter-observer correlation for LVEF at rest (r=0.999) and during exercise (r=0.988).
    • Minimal interstudy variance in LVEF (r=0.98) with no statistically significant difference.

    Conclusions:

    • MBPI demonstrates high reproducibility and minimal observer and interstudy variance for LVEF assessment.
    • MBPI is a reliable method for determining LVEF in both resting and exercise conditions.
