    Summary

    Warfarin use, even when prolonging prothrombin time, does not typically affect skin bleeding time. Factor VII deficiency is unlikely to significantly impact primary hemostasis.

    Background:

    • Warfarin is an anticoagulant medication.
    • Factor VII is a vitamin K-dependent clotting factor.
    • The role of Factor VII in primary hemostasis is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of warfarin-induced factor VII deficiency on skin bleeding time.
    • To determine if prolonged prothrombin times due to warfarin impact bleeding time.
    • To assess the role of Factor VII in primary hemostasis.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 10 patients receiving warfarin.
    • Measured prothrombin times and Factor VII levels.
    • Assessed skin bleeding times in patients.

    Main Results:

    • Patients had a mean prothrombin time of 33 seconds and Factor VII levels of 7%.
    • Skin bleeding times were normal in 9 out of 10 subjects.
    • Warfarin administration did not correlate with abnormal bleeding times.

    Conclusions:

    • Warfarin administration, even beyond therapeutic ranges, is not associated with abnormal bleeding times.
    • Factor VII likely does not play a significant role in primary hemostasis.
    • Further research may be needed to fully elucidate Factor VII's role in hemostasis.
