    Summary

    Iridium-192 irradiation causes characteristic cytologic changes in the endometrium, even in non-cancerous cells. Higher doses (2000 rd) of iridium-192 (Ir-192) radiation lead to macronucleoli in malignant cells.

    Context:

    • Intrauterine exfoliative smears were used to evaluate the effects of iridium-192 (Ir-192) after-loading irradiation.
    • Seventeen patients underwent two smear examinations to assess cytomorphologic changes.

    Purpose:

    • To demonstrate the cytomorphologic effects of iridium-192 (Ir-192) irradiation on intrauterine tissues.
    • To characterize radiation-induced cellular changes in both normal and malignant cylindrical epithelium.

    Summary:

    • Ionizing radiation from iridium-192 (Ir-192) produced characteristic cytologic findings, detectable even in histologically normal, non-radiosensitive cylindrical epithelium.
    • Malignant cells exposed to 1000 rd of Ir-192 showed vacuolation and pseudoeosinophilia, while 2000 rd resulted predominantly in macronucleoli.
    • A marked cellular diathesis was observed, and while hyperchromasia is not definitive for malignancy, chromatin concentrations were reduced post-irradiation.
