    Summary

    Endurance training significantly improved exercise capacity in children with asthma by reducing exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. This physical training enhanced working capacity and reduced exercise-induced asthma symptoms.

    Background:

    • Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition affecting children, often exacerbated by physical activity.
    • Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is a common symptom in pediatric asthma patients.
    • Limited research exists on the impact of structured physical training on EIB in this population.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of a 6-week endurance training program on exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in asthmatic children.
    • To assess changes in working capacity and physiological markers following physical training.
    • To compare outcomes in a trained group versus a control group.

    Main Methods:

    • A 6-week endurance training program was implemented for 28 children with asthma.
    • Peak expiratory flow (PEF) was measured before and after exercise to assess EIB.
    • Resting pulmonary function, heart rate, and postexercise plasma lactate levels were monitored.
    • A control group of 14 asthmatic children did not undergo the training program.

    Main Results:

    • The training group showed a significant reduction in exercise-induced percentage fall in PEF (from 44% to 30%).
    • Resting pulmonary function remained unchanged, but resting and maximum heart rates, and postexercise plasma lactate decreased.
    • Positive correlations were observed between EIB and plasma lactate, and training reduced both.
    • The control group exhibited no significant changes in EIB or physical fitness.

    Conclusions:

    • Six weeks of endurance training is beneficial for reducing exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in asthmatic children.
    • Physical training improves working capacity and associated physiological parameters in pediatric asthma.
    • Endurance exercise represents a viable therapeutic strategy for managing EIB and enhancing fitness in children with asthma.
