Left ventricular function in preeclamptic patients: an echocardiographic study.

J Kuźniar, A Piela, A Skret

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology
    |June 15, 1983

    Summary

Left ventricular function remains largely preserved in most preeclamptic pregnancies, despite increased cardiovascular demands. Echocardiography revealed only minor cardiac dysfunction in a small percentage of patients with preeclampsia.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Obstetrics
    • Maternal-Fetal Medicine

    Background:

    • Preeclampsia poses significant cardiovascular risks during pregnancy.
    • Understanding its impact on cardiac function is crucial for maternal health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess left ventricular (LV) function in preeclamptic pregnancies.
    • To compare LV performance in preeclamptic, normotensive pregnant, and nonpregnant individuals.

    Main Methods:

    • Echocardiographic measurements of LV dimensions and performance indices.
    • Comparison of three groups: 42 preeclamptic patients, 25 normotensive pregnant patients, and 25 nonpregnant controls.

    Main Results:

    • Normal third-trimester pregnancy did not alter LV function compared to nonpregnant state.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Only 7% of preeclamptic patients showed reduced contractility indices.
  • Subclinical myocardial dysfunction was detected in two preeclamptic patients.
  • Conclusions:

    • Left ventricular function is generally well-preserved in preeclampsia, even with volume and pressure overload.
    • Echocardiography can identify latent myocardial dysfunction in select preeclamptic cases.
