Interaural time and amplitude discrimination in noise.

R M Stern, J E Slocum, M S Phillips

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America
    |May 1, 1983

    Summary

This study measured just-noticeable differences (JNDs) for binaural hearing cues like ITD and IID. Discrimination performance varied with masker type, with diotic maskers yielding the best results.

    Area of Science:

    • Auditory Neuroscience
    • Psychoacoustics

    Background:

    • Binaural hearing relies on interaural time delay (ITD) and interaural intensity difference (IID) for sound localization.
    • Understanding how these cues are perceived in the presence of masking noise is crucial for auditory perception research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify the just-noticeable differences (JNDs) for ITD and IID of binaural tones.
    • To investigate the influence of broadband masker characteristics on ITD and IID discrimination.

    Main Methods:

    • Binaural tones at 50 dB SPL and 500 Hz were presented with broadband maskers (100-1000 Hz).
    • Various combinations of ITD and IID were used for the target tones and maskers.
    • JNDs for time and amplitude were measured across different target-to-masker ratios and masker types.

    Main Results:

    • ITD and IID JNDs showed similar dependencies on target-to-masker ratio and masker type.
    • Sound discrimination was best with diotic maskers and worst with interaurally out-of-phase maskers.
    • Other masker types resulted in intermediate discrimination performance.

    Conclusions:

    • Auditory JNDs for binaural cues are significantly affected by masker properties.
    • The findings align with predictions from lateralization and position-variable models of auditory processing.
    • These results enhance our understanding of binaural cue perception in complex acoustic environments.
