    Summary

    Bacteriophages were induced from four of fourteen Bifidobacterium longum strains using UV and mitomycin C. Two strains produced phages without plasmids, indicating no plasmid correlation with phage induction.

    Background:

    • Bifidobacterium longum is a key probiotic bacterium.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate phage production in Bifidobacterium longum strains.
    • To determine if plasmids in B. longum are associated with phage induction.
    • To characterize the morphology of induced bacteriophages.
