    Summary

    Surface coal mine drillers face a higher risk of developing occupational lung disease, including silicosis. This study found a significant prevalence of pneumoconiosis in drill crews, challenging previous assumptions about their safety.

    Pulmonary inflammation and crystalline silica in respirable coal mine dust: dose-response.

    Background:

    • Surface coal miners are typically considered at low risk for pneumoconiosis.
    • Previous studies have not specifically focused on the risks associated with drilling operations in surface mines.

    Observation:

    • A 34-year-old surface coalmine driller was diagnosed with biopsy-proven silicoproteinosis.
    • Two additional drill crew members exhibited radiographic signs consistent with simple silicosis.

    Findings:

    • Reanalysis of existing data revealed that drill crew members, representing 11% of the surface coalminer population, accounted for 38% of pneumoconiosis cases.
    • This indicates a disproportionately high occurrence of lung disease within this specific occupational group.

    Implications:

    • Surface coal mine drillers may have an elevated risk of developing occupational lung diseases like silicosis.
    • Further research and protective measures are warranted for this high-risk group within the surface mining industry.
