    Summary

    Actinic elastosis, characterized by abnormal elastic fibers, was observed in two elderly Black individuals, challenging previous assumptions. This suggests UV-altered fibroblasts may synthesize elastotic material in Black skin.

    Background:

    • Actinic elastosis is commonly associated with chronic sun exposure and is generally considered rare in individuals with darker skin tones.
    • Previous research suggests that Black individuals exhibit a lower prevalence of actinic elastosis compared to other ethnic groups.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and characteristics of dermal alterations, specifically actinic elastosis, in South African Black volunteers with varying degrees of sun exposure.
    • To compare age-dependent and actinic changes in dermal structures between sun-exposed and non-exposed skin in Black individuals.

    Main Methods:

    • Light and electron microscopy were employed to examine skin biopsies from 9 dermatologically normal South African Black volunteers aged 1-72 years.
