    Summary

    Persistent hepatitis B infection is common in nephrotic children with glomerulonephritis, especially membranous types. Early hepatitis B virus (HBV) marker screening is recommended for persistent glomerulonephritis in high-prevalence areas.

    Background:

    • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a global health concern.
    • Glomerulonephritis is a significant cause of kidney disease in children.
    • The association between HBV and glomerulonephritis, particularly in children, requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the incidence of persistent hepatitis B surface antigenaemia in nephrotic children with glomerulonephritis.
    • To explore the relationship between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and different types of glomerulonephritis.
    • To assess the long-term outcomes of HBV-associated glomerulonephritis in children.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 114 nephrotic children with glomerulonephritis.
    • Assessed hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carrier status.
    • Utilized electron microscopy and radioimmunoassay to detect HBV markers and immune complexes.

    Main Results:

    • 25 out of 28 cases of membranous glomerulonephritis were HBsAg carriers.
    • HBsAg carriers were less common in other nephropathies (9 out of 86).
    • 80% of patients had persistent HBs antigenaemia post-recovery; remission correlated with anti-HBe seroconversion.

    Conclusions:

    • HBV infection is strongly associated with membranous glomerulonephritis in nephrotic children.
    • Persistent HBV infection is common after glomerulonephritis recovery.
    • Screening for HBV markers is crucial for persistent glomerulonephritis, especially in high-prevalence regions.
