Increased mortality among elderly patients undergoing cataract extraction.

R P Hirsch, B Schwartz

    Summary

Older adults undergoing cataract surgery had nearly double the mortality risk compared to those having other procedures. This suggests cataracts may indicate broader systemic health issues, not just eye problems.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Geriatrics
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Senile cataracts are common in older adults.
    • Cataract extraction is a frequent surgical procedure.
    • The systemic health implications of cataracts are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the mortality risk associated with cataract extraction in patients aged 50 years and older.
    • To compare the mortality rates of cataract surgery patients with those undergoing other surgical procedures.
    • To determine if diabetes influences the mortality risk in cataract surgery patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective cohort study.
    • Analysis of 167 patients undergoing cataract extraction between January 1, 1979, and December 31, 1979.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Comparison with 824 control patients who had other surgical procedures.
  • Stratification of data by age and sex.
  • Analysis of the impact of diabetes on mortality.
  • Main Results:

    • Patients undergoing cataract extraction had nearly twice the mortality rate compared to control patients.
    • This increased mortality risk was observed even after stratifying by age and sex.
    • Diabetic patients did not significantly alter the relative mortality risk associated with cataract surgery.

    Conclusions:

    • Senile cataracts may be indicative of underlying systemic disease rather than solely local ocular pathology.
    • Cataract surgery in older adults is associated with a higher mortality risk, suggesting a need for comprehensive health assessments.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the systemic factors contributing to cataract formation and increased surgical risk.
