New method for reshaping the cornea.

    Journal of biomedical optics·2012

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Veterinary Ophthalmology
    • Corneal Surgery

    Background:

    • Radial keratotomy (RK) is a refractive surgical procedure.
    • Understanding the impact of deep corneal incisions is crucial for patient safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effects of partially penetrating corneal incisions on ocular structures.
    • To assess potential complications associated with deep radial keratotomy.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight partially penetrating incisions were made in eye-bank, nonhuman primate, and canine eyes.
    • Corneal thickness was 80%-110% of central pachymetric thickness.
    • Posterior corneal surface evaluation used vital staining and correlative microscopy.

    Main Results:

    • Endothelial damage occurred without anterior chamber perforation in some specimens.
    • Posterior folds in Descemet's membrane were observed under all incision sites.
    • Corneal incision direction may influence optical aberrations near the visual axis.

    Conclusions:

    • Radial keratotomy with up to eight deep incisions may lead to optic defects.
    • Further animal studies are recommended to assess long-term corneal and endothelial effects.
