    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Biophysics
    • Laser Medicine

    Context:

    • Spinal cord dorsal column function
    • Somatosensory evoked potentials (S.E.P.)
    • Laser-tissue interaction

    Purpose:

    • Investigate the effects of Argon laser irradiation on the cat's spinal dorsal column.
    • Evaluate the role of photoactivation in laser-induced spinal cord changes.
    • Assess the utility of S.E.P. in understanding Laser-Photo-Biological-Effects (L.P.B.E.).

    Summary:

    • Unilateral Argon laser irradiation (500 mW, 2 mm spot size) of the cat's dorsal column caused disappearance of early S.E.P. components and histological destruction.
    • Fluorescein photoactivation with Argon laser in the spinal cord produced similar S.E.P. and histological results as non-fluorescein groups.
    • S.E.P. measurements proved effective in demonstrating Laser-Photo-Biological-Effects (L.P.B.E.) in the spinal cord.

    Impact:

    • Provides evidence for localized tissue destruction by focused laser irradiation in the spinal cord.
    • Demonstrates the applicability of S.E.P. as a biomarker for laser-induced biological effects.
    • Contributes to understanding the mechanisms of laser-tissue interaction in neurological contexts.
