    Summary

Intervening life events, like job loss, are significant in connecting attributional style and depression. This study found a correlation between attributional style and depression only after experiencing an uncontrollable event.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Clinical Psychology
    • Social Psychology

    Background:

    • Attributional style, a cognitive pattern, is linked to mental health outcomes.
    • The reformulated helplessness model posits that negative life events mediate the relationship between attributional style and depression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of intervening life events in the link between attributional style and depression.
    • To test the reformulated helplessness hypothesis by examining individuals who experienced job redundancy.

    Main Methods:

    • A comparative study design was employed.
    • Twenty male subjects experiencing job redundancy (uncontrollable event) were compared with 20 control subjects.
    • Measures included attributional style, depression, and self-esteem assessments.

    Main Results:

    • A significant correlation between attributional style and depression was observed specifically in the group that experienced job redundancy.
    • This correlation was evident on the internal-external dimension of attributional style.
    • No significant correlation was found in the control group.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings provide tentative support for the reformulated helplessness model.
    • Intervening uncontrollable life events appear crucial in mediating the relationship between attributional style and depressive symptoms.
