[Interstitial hypertrophic neuritis. Study of 3 cases].

    Summary

Three cases of hypertrophic interstitial neuropathy showed severe nerve conduction deficits and characteristic onion bulb formations on biopsy. Findings suggest these may represent Dejerin-Sottas or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease variants.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Hypertrophic interstitial neuropathies are rare neurological disorders.
    • Characterized by nerve enlargement and progressive neurological deficits.

    Observation:

    • Three cases presented with severe reduction in motor nerve conduction velocity.
    • Sural nerve biopsy revealed typical onion bulb formations due to connective tissue proliferation.

    Findings:

    • Onion bulb formation in hypertrophic neuropathy correlates with decreased motor nerve conduction.
    • One case met criteria for Dejerin-Sottas disease.
    • Two cases were likely variants of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

    Implications:

    • Understanding the pathogenesis of onion bulb formation is crucial for diagnosing hypertrophic neuropathies.
    • Differentiating between Dejerin-Sottas disease and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease requires careful clinicopathological correlation.
    • These findings contribute to the classification and understanding of peripheral nerve disorders.
