    Area of Science:

    • Natural Product Chemistry
    • Pharmacognosy
    • Organic Chemistry

    Background:

    • Phaeantharine is a quaternary bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid found in Phaeanthus ebracteolatus (family Anonaceae).
    • Bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids are known for diverse biological activities.
    • There is growing interest in natural products for pest control and antimicrobial applications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To elucidate and propose a revised chemical structure for the alkaloid phaeantharine.
    • To provide a foundation for further research into its potential applications.

    Main Methods:

    • Spectrometric analysis (e.g., NMR, MS) was employed to gather data for structural elucidation.
    • Comparative analysis with existing structural data was performed.

    Main Results:

    • A revised structure (designated as structure 8) for phaeantharine has been proposed.
    • Spectrometric data strongly supports the proposed revised structure.

    Conclusions:

    • The revised structure of phaeantharine provides a more accurate representation for future studies.
    • Phaeantharine's demonstrated potential as an insecticide and its moderate antimicrobial activity warrant further investigation.
