    Background:

    • Spinal cord lesions represent a significant health burden with varying demographic distributions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate and compare the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of spinal cord lesions between males and females.
    • To identify potential differences in causes, symptoms, and recovery patterns based on sex.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 1234 patients with spinal cord lesions treated between November 1969 and December 1979.
    • Data collected included patient demographics, cause of lesion (medical vs. trauma), injury mechanisms, clinical presentation, and hospitalization duration.
    • Statistical comparisons were performed between male and female patient groups.

    Main Results:

    • Overall incidence of spinal cord lesions was lower in females (30%) compared to males, particularly for traumatic cases (22.4%).

    • Adequate household equipment was noted as more critical for handicapped females.

    Conclusions:

    • Significant sex-based disparities exist in the incidence, etiology, and clinical course of spinal cord lesions.
    • These findings underscore the need for sex-specific approaches in the prevention, management, and rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries.
