    Summary

    Chronic progesterone treatment causes hyperventilation in guinea pigs, a phenomenon previously unobserved in non-human animals. Estrogen enhances this progesterone-induced effect on ventilation.

    Background:

    • Progesterone-induced hyperventilation is a known effect in humans.
    • This effect has not been previously documented in animal models.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of chronic progesterone administration on ventilation in guinea pigs.
    • To determine if estrogen influences progesterone's effect on ventilation.

    Main Methods:

    • Virgin female guinea pigs were administered cholesterol (control), progesterone, or estrogen plus progesterone via subcutaneous silastic capsules for 28 days.
    • Arterial blood gases and respiratory rates were measured on day 28.
    • Hormone levels were correlated with physiological measurements.

    Main Results:

    • Progesterone and estrogen plus progesterone treatments led to elevated arterial pH compared to controls.
    • Arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure (PCO2) was significantly reduced in both progesterone-treated groups.
    • Estrogen facilitated the correlation between progesterone levels and reduced PCO2.

    Conclusions:

    • Chronic progesterone administration induces hyperventilation in guinea pigs.
    • Estrogen plays a facilitative role in progesterone's action on ventilation.
