    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the association between different sleep durations and mortality risk.
    • To examine the impact of sleep patterns on mortality from specific diseases and all causes.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized data from the 1965 Human Population Laboratory survey of 6928 adults in Alameda County, CA.
    • Conducted a 9-year mortality follow-up study.
    • Performed statistical analyses, including age-adjustment and simultaneous adjustment for multiple confounding variables.

    Main Results:

    • Mortality rates for ischemic heart disease, cancer, stroke, and all causes were lowest for individuals sleeping 7 or 8 hours nightly.
    • Men sleeping ≤6 or ≥9 hours had 1.7 times the death rate of those sleeping 7-8 hours; women had a relative risk of 1.6.
    • The association remained significant after adjusting for numerous lifestyle and demographic factors, with a reduced relative risk of 1.3 (p ≤ 0.04).

    Conclusions:

    • Optimal sleep duration (7-8 hours) is associated with significantly lower mortality risk.
    • Sleep patterns represent an independent risk factor for mortality, even after accounting for various health and lifestyle variables.
    • Findings underscore the importance of adequate sleep duration for long-term health and survival.
