    Summary

    Diabetic children often have lower serum magnesium levels compared to healthy children. This study found lower magnesium in children with well-controlled diabetes, suggesting a link between diabetes and hypomagnesemia.

    Background:

    • Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder affecting children worldwide.
    • Nutritional status, including trace element levels, can be altered in pediatric diabetes.
    • Previous research has not extensively explored magnesium status in children with well-controlled diabetes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate serum concentrations of key minerals (iron, copper, zinc, magnesium) in Swedish children with well-controlled diabetes.
    • To compare these mineral levels with age- and sex-matched healthy controls.
    • To explore potential correlations between mineral levels and diabetes duration.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples were collected from 27 Swedish children diagnosed with well-controlled diabetes.
    • Mineral concentrations (iron, copper, zinc, magnesium) were analyzed.
    • A subset of 13 diabetic children was compared to 13 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

    Main Results:

    • Diabetic children exhibited significantly lower serum magnesium concentrations compared to healthy controls (p < 0.01).
    • Serum levels of iron, copper, and zinc did not significantly differ between diabetic children and controls.
    • A negative correlation was observed between serum magnesium levels and the duration of diabetes (p < 0.05).

    Conclusions:

    • This study reports hypomagnesemia in children with well-controlled diabetes, a finding not previously documented.
    • Lower serum magnesium may be associated with the duration of diabetes in pediatric patients.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the clinical implications of hypomagnesemia in pediatric diabetes.
