The determination of smoking types: evidence for a sociological-pharmacological continuum

The Horn-Waingrow smoking typology was partially replicated in a sample of college women. Findings from regression analyses, using the types as dependent variables and the smoking behavior of parents and peers, age, the age smoking begun regularly, frequency and amount of smoking as independent variables, supported the notion of a sociological-pharmacological continuum underlying the types. Zero-order correlation of quitting influence factors with the types suggested different strategies for cessation based on the types and indicated the usefulness of the type concept.
