    Background:

    • Prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are common conditions.
    • The potential role of viruses in prostate carcinogenesis is an area of ongoing research.
    • Understanding cellular morphology and viral markers can provide insights into prostate tissue pathology.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence of viruses or virus-like particles in benign and malignant prostate tissues.
    • To characterize the surface morphology of prostate acinar cells.
    • To detect specific viral proteins in prostate tissues using immunochemical methods.

    Main Methods:

    • Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used for ultrastructural analysis.
    • Tissue culture techniques were employed after enzymatic removal of stromal cells.
    • Competition radioimmunoassay was utilized to detect p30 core protein of type-C RNA viruses.

    Main Results:

    • Viruses could not be definitively identified by TEM.

    • A protein antigenically similar to the p30 core protein was detected in 38% of prostate carcinoma and 48% of BPH tissues.

    Conclusions:

    • While viruses were not directly observed, the presence of a p30 core protein-like antigen suggests a potential association with oncogenic RNA viruses in prostate tissues.
    • Cellular surface morphology is highly variable across different prostate conditions.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the significance of these findings in prostate cancer development and progression.
