Determination of HDL-cholesterol. Comparison between two methods.

M R Averna, G Lo Cascio, G B Rini

Bollettino Della Societa Italiana Di Biologia Sperimentale
    |April 30, 1983
    PubMed
    Summary

A new method for High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Cholesterol assay using heparin-CaCl2-NaCl2 shows precise and accurate results. This method correlates well with the PTA-MgCl2 technique for measuring HDL Cholesterol levels.

    Area of Science:

    • Clinical Chemistry
    • Biochemistry
    • Cardiovascular Diagnostics

    Background:

    • Accurate measurement of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Cholesterol is crucial for cardiovascular risk assessment.
    • Existing methods for HDL Cholesterol assay may have limitations in precision or accuracy.
    • The development of novel, reliable assay techniques is an ongoing area of research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate a new method for quantifying HDL Cholesterol.
    • To assess the precision and accuracy of the novel heparin-CaCl2-NaCl2 assay.
    • To compare the performance of the new method with a standard technique (PTA-MgCl2).

    Main Methods:

    • A new HDL Cholesterol assay was developed utilizing heparin-CaCl2-NaCl2.
    • The assay's precision and accuracy were evaluated.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Results were compared against the established PTA-MgCl2 method for HDL Cholesterol determination.
  • Main Results:

    • The heparin-CaCl2-NaCl2 method demonstrated good correlation with the PTA-MgCl2 technique.
    • The assay yielded precise and accurate HDL Cholesterol measurements.
    • Mean HDL-C values were determined for normolipemic and hypertriglyceridemic subjects.

    Conclusions:

    • The novel heparin-CaCl2-NaCl2 method is a precise and accurate technique for HDL Cholesterol assay.
    • This method offers a reliable alternative for routine clinical laboratory use.
    • Further validation in diverse patient populations may be warranted.
