Japanese medicine in Manchuria: the South Manchuria Medical College

During the eleven years of its existence as Namman Igakudo, the school graduated 421 physicians; after it was upgraded to a university-level school in 1922, there were, 1,181 graduates until the college closed as a Japanese institution in 1946. There were over 500 graduates from the second-level, Igaku Semmon-bu, between 1929 and 1946. The graduated of the school became leaders of Japanese-sponsored programs in medicine and public health in Manchuria. Others returned to the home islands as practitioners; those who wished to enter academic medicine usually turned in time to Kyoto University Faculty of Medicine. The S.M.M.C. played a unique role in medical research in Japan. Further, it became one of the leading medical schools in China.
