    Summary

A new, generic severity of illness index is introduced for evaluating hospital performance and comparing patients. This index is applicable to most hospital patients and its reliability and rater time are assessed.

    Area of Science:

    • Healthcare Management
    • Medical Informatics
    • Health Services Research

    Background:

    • Accurate assessment of hospital output requires measuring both case mix and severity of illness.
    • Existing methods may not be universally applicable or adequately capture patient complexity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To introduce and evaluate a novel, generic severity-of-illness index.
    • To determine the reliability and time efficiency of the new index across different raters.

    Main Methods:

    • Development of a new, broadly applicable severity-of-illness index.
    • Assessment of the index's reliability using various rater types.
    • Measurement of the time required for index application by different raters.

    Main Results:

    • The new severity-of-illness index demonstrates applicability to a wide range of hospital patients.
    • Reliability and rater time data were collected and analyzed for the index.
    • Findings support the index's potential for standardized hospital performance evaluation.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed severity-of-illness index offers a versatile tool for healthcare analysis.
    • The index is reliable and practical for use by different healthcare professionals.
    • This tool can enhance the critical examination of hospital performance and patient comparisons.
