    Summary

A 14-year-old girl presented with retinal tumors, diagnosed as bilateral peripapillary exophytic retinal hemangioblastomas, a manifestation of von Hippel's disease. Treatment with argon laser photocoagulation showed minimal efficacy against the tumor.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Medical Genetics
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Von Hippel's disease, also known as angiomatosis retinae, is a rare genetic disorder.
    • It is characterized by the development of hemangioblastomas in the retina and central nervous system.

    Observation:

    • A 14-year-old Iranian girl presented with bilateral elevation of the peripapillary retina.
    • Diagnostic imaging, including fluorescein angiography, revealed bilateral peripapillary exophytic retinal hemangioblastomas.

    Findings:

    • The clinical presentation was consistent with angiomatosis retinae (von Hippel's disease).
    • Argon laser photocoagulation was applied to the more severely affected left eye.
    • The treatment resulted in minimal effect on the tumor growth.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the challenges in managing retinal hemangioblastomas in young patients.
    • Further research into optimal treatment strategies for von Hippel's disease is warranted.
    • Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for preserving vision in patients with this condition.
