    Summary

    Sucralfate, a medication for duodenal ulcers, was evaluated for blood thinning effects. Studies confirmed sucralfate does not exhibit anticoagulant activity in patients undergoing treatment.

    Background:

    • Sucralfate is a basic aluminum sucrose sulfate compound.
    • Structurally similar to heparin, it lacks in vitro anticoagulant properties.
    • Previous research indicated no anticoagulant effects in animal models.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the potential anticoagulant effects of sucralfate in humans.
    • To assess sucralfate's safety profile regarding hemostasis.
    • To complement efficacy studies for duodenal ulcer disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty-eight patients with duodenal ulcer disease were randomized to receive sucralfate.
    • Prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) were measured.
    • Coagulation parameters were assessed before and after 2-4 weeks of sucralfate treatment.

    Main Results:

    • No statistically significant changes in prothrombin time were observed.
    • No statistically significant changes in activated partial thromboplastin time were observed.
    • Sucralfate administration did not induce anticoagulant activity in patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Sucralfate does not possess clinically relevant anticoagulant effects.
    • The drug is safe for use in patients with duodenal ulcer disease concerning coagulation.
    • Sucralfate can be safely co-administered without interfering with normal hemostasis.
