Isolated chylopericardium associated with lymphoma.

J C Barton, J R Durant

    Southern Medical Journal
    |November 1, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

Isolated chylopericardium, a rare condition, was observed in a patient with lymphocytic lymphoma in remission. This effusion may have stemmed from prior mediastinal lymphoma, warranting further investigation.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Lymphocytic lymphoma can present with various extranodal manifestations.
    • Chylopericardium is a rare accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the pericardial space.
    • Mediastinal involvement is a known complication of lymphoma.

    Observation:

    • The case describes isolated chylopericardium in a patient previously diagnosed with lymphocytic lymphoma.
    • The patient's lymphoma was in remission at the time of observation.
    • The pericardial effusion was suspected to be linked to prior mediastinal lymphoma.

    Findings:

    • The study documents a rare association between chylopericardium and lymphocytic lymphoma.
    • The effusion's origin was potentially linked to residual or past mediastinal disease.
    • Exploration of the pericardium and mediastinum is crucial for undiagnosed effusions in cancer patients.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of considering rare presentations of lymphoma complications.
    • Pericardial and mediastinal exploration can be vital for diagnosing malignancy-related effusions when initial tests are inconclusive.
    • Understanding such associations aids in refining diagnostic and treatment strategies for lymphoma patients.
