Histologic classification as a prognostic criterion for canine lymphosarcoma.

R E Weller, C A Holmberg, G H Theilen

    American Journal of Veterinary Research
    |August 1, 1980

    Summary

Histologic classification of canine lymphosarcoma using the Rappaport schema did not predict treatment outcomes. While diffuse histiocytic types showed longer remission, overall survival and remission rates were similar across classifications.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Oncology
    • Canine Cancer Research
    • Tumor Histopathology

    Background:

    • Lymphosarcoma is a common cancer in dogs.
    • Accurate prognostic indicators are crucial for treatment planning.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the prognostic significance of histologic classification in canine lymphosarcoma.
    • To determine if the Rappaport schema correlates with clinical outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Histologic classification of 72 canine lymphosarcoma samples using the Rappaport schema.
    • Analysis of clinical data including remission rates and survival times.
    • Statistical analysis (logarithmic analysis of variance) to compare outcomes across histologic types.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Diffuse lymphosarcoma (90.3%) was more common than nodular (9.7%).
    • Histiocytic and poorly differentiated lymphocytic types were the most prevalent cytologic subtypes.
    • Overall complete remission rate was 64%; median survival varied but showed no statistically significant difference between major groups.
    • Diffuse histiocytic types exhibited longer remission durations, though not statistically significant.

    Conclusions:

    • Histologic classification via the Rappaport schema is not a reliable prognostic criterion for canine lymphosarcoma.
    • Therapeutic response, remission duration, and survival are not predictable based on this classification alone.
    • Further research may be needed to identify more accurate prognostic markers in canine lymphosarcoma.
