    Background:

    • Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands.
    • Immune complexes are implicated in various autoimmune diseases, but their role in Sjögren's syndrome is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and significance of immune complexes in patients with Sjögren's syndrome.
    • To determine if immune complex levels correlate with disease activity, glandular pathology, or the development of lymphoma.

    Main Methods:

    • Sera from 48 Sjögren's syndrome patients were analyzed for immune complexes using the Raji cell assay.
    • Serum complement levels were assessed.
    • Five patients were monitored serially during the progression to pseudolymphoma or malignant lymphoma.

    Main Results:

    • No correlation was found between immune complex levels and the degree of lymphocytic infiltration in labial salivary glands.
    • Serum complement levels were within the normal range for all patients.
    • In four of five serially followed patients, immune complex levels remained largely unchanged and did not parallel disease activity, rheumatoid factor, or SS-A/SS-B antibody concentrations.

    Conclusions:

    • Immune complexes do not appear to be a significant factor correlating with the severity of labial gland infiltration in Sjögren's syndrome.
    • Immune complex levels do not consistently track disease activity or the development of lymphoma in this patient cohort.
    • The role of immune complexes in the pathogenesis of Sjögren's syndrome warrants further investigation.
