    Summary

Experimental stimuli can provoke the formation and elongation of cilia in the Rhesus monkey eye. These newly formed cilia may grow towards the cell interior, suggesting a novel cellular response.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Cell Biology
    • Microscopy

    Background:

    • Cilia are microtubular structures present in various cell types, including the ciliary epithelium of the eye.
    • The normal structure and response of these cilia to experimental conditions are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the ultrastructure of cilia in Rhesus monkey ciliary epithelium.
    • To examine cilia formation and orientation changes in response to experimental stimuli.

    Main Methods:

    • Electron microscopy was used to study cilia in normal and experimentally treated Rhesus monkey eyes.
    • Experimental treatments included paracentesis and vitreous injection of hemoglobin.

    Main Results:

    • All studied cilia exhibited a standard 9 + 0 microtubule pattern, with some showing aberrant arrangements.
    • Cilia number and length increased in treated eyes.
    • Newly formed cilia were observed to orient towards the cell interior, contrary to normal orientation.

    Conclusions:

    • Cilia formation and elongation can be experimentally induced in the ciliary epithelium.
    • Diverse experimental stimuli, with or without drugs, can provoke cilia formation.
