Auditory brainstem evoked responses in autistic children.

    Summary

    This study found that autistic children show delayed and more variable brainstem evoked responses (BSER) to sound, suggesting brainstem dysfunction. These electrophysiologic differences support theories of perceptual inconstancy in autism.

    Background:

    • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition.
    • Previous research suggests potential brainstem abnormalities in individuals with autism.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate brainstem function in autistic children using auditory evoked potentials.
    • To compare brainstem evoked responses (BSER) between autistic and typically developing children.

    Main Methods:

    • Matched-pair design comparing six autistic children with six age- and sex-matched controls.
    • Auditory stimuli were used to elicit brainstem evoked responses (BSER).
    • Pure tone audiometry was conducted to assess hearing thresholds.
