    Attending sexually transmitted disease (STD) training significantly improves practitioner knowledge immediately and long-term. Lower initial scores predict greater gains, identifying those most likely to benefit from STD clinical training.

    Background:

    • Effective management of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) relies on up-to-date practitioner knowledge.
    • Assessing the impact of targeted training programs is crucial for improving STD care.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate immediate and sustained knowledge gains from STD training.
    • To identify easily assessable characteristics of practitioners who would benefit most from STD training.

    Main Methods:

    • 55 practitioners (physicians and physician extenders) completed standardized tests before, immediately after, and 4-15 months post-training.
    • Training consisted of intensive one- or two-week STD courses.
    • Pre-course scores and practitioner demographics were analyzed.

    Conclusions:

    • STD training courses yield both immediate and lasting knowledge enhancement.
    • Pre-course assessments and practitioner background data can effectively identify individuals most receptive to and in need of STD clinical training.
