Background:

The American Academy of Periodontology's Task Force on Manpower surveyed its members.
Understanding practice styles and perceived opportunities is crucial for workforce planning.

Purpose of the Study:

To gather data on practice styles and perceived opportunities among periodontists.
To inform the American Academy of Periodontology about the current state of the profession.

Main Methods:

A survey was distributed to 3,048 Active and Affiliate members of the American Academy of Periodontology.
1,580 periodontists (52% response rate) provided data between November 1978 and April 1979.

Data collected includes periodontist demographics, retirement age expectations, practice forms, work hours, patient visits, and referral patterns.
Analysis covers practice locations, community demographics, patient travel distance, waiting times for new patients and treatment, and booking preferences.
Respondents' perceptions of periodontal service supply and factors influencing practice location selection were also documented.

Conclusions:

The survey provides a comprehensive snapshot of periodontist practice patterns and professional outlooks during the late 1970s.
This data serves as a baseline for understanding the periodontal workforce and its future trajectory.
