Retinal vascular occlusion and thrombocyte aggregation.

H Heidrich, J Hofner, J Wollensak

    Journal of Medicine
    |January 1, 1980

    Summary

Elevated thrombocyte aggregation is linked to retinal vascular occlusion. This finding suggests anti-platelet therapy may be beneficial for patients with arterial sclerosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Hematology
    • Vascular Medicine

    Background:

    • Acute retinal vascular occlusion is a serious condition affecting vision.
    • Thrombocyte aggregation plays a role in vascular events.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate thrombocyte aggregation in patients with acute retinal vascular occlusion.
    • To compare aggregation levels with a control group.

    Main Methods:

    • Platelet aggregation test (PAT III) used in 26 patients with retinal vascular occlusion.
    • Comparison with 37 age-matched controls without vascular occlusions.

    Main Results:

    • 100% of patients with retinal vascular occlusion showed high thrombocyte aggregation.
    • 59.5% of the control group had high thrombocyte aggregation.

    Conclusions:

    • Pathologically elevated thrombocyte aggregation is significant in retinal vascular occlusion pathogenesis.
    • Inhibitors of thrombocyte aggregation may be an appropriate treatment strategy.
