    Summary

Routine treadmill assessments after myocardial infarction are safe and helpful for patient management. This study found that symptom-limited maximal treadmill tests in patients recovering from myocardial infarction showed no complications and provided valuable insights.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Exercise Physiology

    Background:

    • Myocardial infarction (MI) recovery requires careful patient monitoring.
    • Assessing functional capacity post-MI is crucial for rehabilitation and management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the safety and utility of routine symptom-limited maximal treadmill assessment in patients convalescing after myocardial infarction.
    • To determine the work capacity and identify limiting symptoms in post-MI patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Sixty-eight consecutive patients post-MI underwent symptom-limited maximal treadmill testing.
    • Testing was performed at a median of six weeks post-infarction.
    • Data collected included work capacity, chest pain, ST segment changes, and arrhythmias.

    Main Results:

    • 90% of patients completed the treadmill assessment without complications.
    • 56% achieved average work capacity for their age group.
    • 32% reported angina, 31% showed ST depression, and ventricular premature beats were common; supraventricular tachycardia was the only arrhythmia requiring treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • Symptom-limited maximal treadmill assessment is a safe procedure for patients post-myocardial infarction.
    • This assessment provides valuable data for patient management and rehabilitation planning.
    • It helps in understanding functional capacity and identifying potential cardiac events during exertion.
