    Summary

    Bacterial plaque on dentures was analyzed in edentulous patients. Yeast was found in patients with denture stomatitis, but plaque composition showed no significant differences between healthy and diseased palatal mucosa.

    Background:

    • Bacterial plaque on dentures is a common issue for edentulous patients.
    • Denture stomatitis affects the palatal mucosa, and its relationship with denture plaque is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the composition and ultrastructure of bacterial plaque on the fitting surface of maxillary dentures.
    • To compare plaque characteristics in patients with and without denture stomatitis.

    Main Methods:

    • Electron microscopy was used to examine denture plaque samples from 12 edentulous patients.
    • Plaque samples were collected from the fitting surface of maxillary dentures.
    • Patients were clinically assessed for denture stomatitis.

    Main Results:

    • Bacteria were present in 11 of 12 patients; yeast cells were found in 5 patients, all with denture stomatitis.
    • No systematic differences in plaque ultrastructure were observed between patients with and without denture stomatitis.
    • Plaque primarily consisted of microorganisms in an intermicrobial matrix, often with predominant cocci or short rods.

    Conclusions:

    • While yeast is associated with denture stomatitis, the overall bacterial plaque composition and ultrastructure on dentures do not significantly differ between patients with and without this condition.
    • The denture material itself was not invaded by microorganisms.
