    Summary

Infectious mononucleosis rarely co-occurs with peritonsillar abscess, affecting 1% of patients. Prompt treatment with stab incision led to rapid improvement in all observed cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Infectious mononucleosis, a common viral illness, can present with complications.
    • Peritonsillar abscess is a known complication in the head and neck region.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the incidence and outcomes of patients with both infectious mononucleosis and peritonsillar abscess.
    • To highlight the importance of considering this rare combination in clinical practice.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of a 10-year dataset from an ENT department.
    • Inclusion criteria focused on patients diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis and peritonsillar abscess.

    Main Results:

    • The combination of infectious mononucleosis and peritonsillar abscess occurred in 1% of infectious mononucleosis admissions.
    • One patient experienced mild upper airway obstruction.
    • All four patients with this combined condition showed significant improvement after stab incision treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • The co-occurrence of infectious mononucleosis and peritonsillar abscess is rare but clinically significant.
    • Early recognition and intervention, such as stab incision, are effective for managing this condition.
    • Clinicians should maintain awareness of this rare differential diagnosis in relevant cases.
