    Summary

    Microbial analysis of denture surfaces revealed significant anaerobic bacterial counts, predominantly cocci and rods. Yeast presence was minimal, suggesting bacterial biofilm is the primary oral microbiota on dentures.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify the viable anaerobic bacteria and yeast on the fitting surface of maxillary dentures.
    • To characterize the microbial morphology in denture plaque.

    • Sandblasted, self-adhesive tape was applied to maxillary dentures of 17 edentulous subjects for one week without hygiene.
    • Microorganisms were collected, suspended, and quantified using viable counts for anaerobes and yeasts.
    • Microscopy (light and electron) was used to examine bacterial plaque morphology.
