Interaction between corticosteroids and beta 2-agonists in acute asthma

A Arnaud, J Charpin

European Journal of Respiratory Diseases. Supplement

    Summary

Combining corticosteroids with terbutaline significantly improved lung function in acute asthma patients. This combination therapy offers an advantage over corticosteroids alone for severe acute asthma treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Acute asthma requires effective treatment to improve lung function.
    • Corticosteroids and beta-2 adrenergic agonists are common asthma medications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of combining corticosteroids with terbutaline versus corticosteroids alone in treating acute asthma.
    • To assess the impact of combination therapy on forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1).

    Main Methods:

    • Randomized controlled trial involving two groups of acute asthma patients.
    • Group 1 received intravenous corticosteroids; Group 2 received corticosteroids plus terbutaline.
    • Lung function (FEV1) was measured daily for four days.

    Main Results:

    • Corticosteroids alone did not significantly change mean FEV1.
    • Combination therapy with corticosteroids and terbutaline led to significant FEV1 improvement, increasing over four days.
    • The combination group showed statistically significant FEV1 differences compared to the corticosteroid-only group.

    Conclusions:

    • Combining bronchodilators (terbutaline) with corticosteroids may be advantageous for treating severe acute asthma.
    • This combination therapy demonstrates superior efficacy in improving lung function compared to corticosteroids alone.
