    Background:

    • Recent studies indicate reduced maximal binding (beta max) of 3H-imipramine to platelets in patients with depression.
    • The clinical significance of this finding, particularly in the absence of depressive symptoms, remains unclear.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate if the decreased 3H-imipramine platelet binding observed in depression persists in the euthymic state of bipolar disorder.
    • To determine if 3H-imipramine platelet binding is a state-independent marker for affective illness.

    Main Methods:

    • 3H-imipramine binding assays were performed on platelets from 12 medication-free euthymic bipolar patients.
    • Platelet samples from 12 healthy volunteers served as controls.
    • Maximal binding (beta max) and binding affinity (Kd) were measured.
