    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Epilepsy Research
    • Behavioral Neuroscience

    Background:

    • The nucleus accumbens (n. accumbens) plays a role in reward and motivation.
    • The amygdala is involved in processing emotions and fear responses.
    • Limbic seizures can lead to functional changes in brain regions like the n. accumbens.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate functional changes in the nucleus accumbens following amygdaloid seizures.
    • To determine the role of the nucleus accumbens in the development of amygdaloid seizures.
    • To examine the interaction between the nucleus accumbens and amygdala during seizure activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Kindling and transference phenomenon were used to study the interaction between n. accumbens and amygdala.
    • Bilateral lesions of the n. accumbens were performed in cats.
    • Electrophysiological recordings (EEG) were used to monitor seizure development.

    Main Results:

    • Positive transfer of kindling was observed from the n. accumbens to the amygdala and hippocampus.
    • Amygdaloid kindling induced an epileptic focus in the n. accumbens.
    • n. accumbens lesions reduced the after-discharge threshold and prolonged seizure duration but did not affect the kindling rate.

    Conclusions:

    • The nucleus accumbens is involved in the development and spread of limbic seizures.
    • Functional alterations in the n. accumbens occur as a result of amygdaloid seizures.
    • The n. accumbens may play a modulatory role in seizure susceptibility and propagation.
