    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the occurrence of different psychogenic needs in patients with previous depressive disorders.

    Main Methods:

    • 118 outpatients with prior depressive disorders completed the Cesarec and Marke Personality Inventory.
    • Patients were diagnosed using strict criteria into unipolar depressive psychosis (UP), bipolar depressive psychosis (BP), unclassified depression (NUD), and reactive neurotico-depressive (RND) groups.

    Main Results:

    • Bipolar depressive psychosis (BP) patients exhibited a reduced need for approval, dependency, guilt feelings, and ego conflicts.
    • BP patients showed a stronger wish to dominate and lead compared to other depression groups.
    • The unclassified depression (NUD) group, though small, displayed extreme scores, indicating a weak need to dominate and be central, alongside a need for care.

    Conclusions:

    • Psychogenic needs vary significantly across different subtypes of depressive disorders.
    • Specific patterns of psychogenic needs may help distinguish bipolar depression from other forms.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the clinical implications of these psychogenic need differences.
