    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of aging on the mechanical properties of isolated canine right ventricular trabeculae.
    • To compare the performance of trabeculae from young and aged dogs.

    Main Methods:

    • Isolated canine right ventricular trabeculae were studied.
    • Two age groups were compared: young (approx. 9 months) and aged (over 8 years).
    • Mechanical performance parameters including developed force, shortening, contraction/relaxation rates, and stiffness were measured.

    • A tendency for decreased extent of shortening was observed.

    • Aging leads to a decreased speed of contraction.
    • Despite functional changes, aging did not alter the overall contractile strength of these cardiac tissues.
