    Guinea-pig complement-activating marker (GPCA) on mouse T cells is not Thy-1. This distinct surface component selectively activates complement, differentiating it from the Thy-1 antigen.

    Background:

    • Mouse T cells exhibit selective sensitivity to antibody-independent complement-mediated lysis by guinea-pig serum.
    • This sensitivity suggests a specific surface component on T cells responsible for complement activation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine if the complement-activating surface component on T cells is identical to the Thy-1 marker.
    • To investigate the role of Thy-1 in guinea-pig serum (GPS) cytotoxicity.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized S.49 mouse lymphoblastoid cells and rat thymus cell suspensions.
    • Assessed sensitivity to anti-Thy-1.2 antibodies plus complement.
    • Evaluated susceptibility to normal guinea-pig serum cytotoxicity.
