Lateral and third-ventricular CSF formation after metrizamide CT ventriculography

V Dhawan, M D Deck, D A Rottenberg

    Neurology
    |May 1, 1981
    PubMed
    Summary

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production in the lateral ventricles averaged 0.14 ml/min, while the third ventricle produced 0.014 ml/min. The third ventricle accounts for about 10% of total CSF production.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics are crucial for brain health.
    • Accurate measurement of CSF production rates is essential for understanding neurological disorders.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify the rates of CSF formation in the lateral and third ventricles.
    • To determine the contribution of the third ventricle to overall CSF production.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized metrizamide computed tomography (CT) ventriculography in three patients.
    • Estimated ventricular volumes using partial volume analysis.
    • Measured metrizamide washout (elimination) from CSF via serial CT scans.

    Main Results:

    • Average CSF formation rate in the lateral ventricles was 0.14 ml/min.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Average CSF formation rate in the third ventricle was 0.014 ml/min.
  • The third ventricle contributed approximately 10% to total lateral and third-ventricular CSF production.
  • Conclusions:

    • The third ventricle's CSF production rate is approximately 10% of the total lateral and third-ventricular production.
    • Findings align with the relative mass of choroid plexus tissue in these ventricles.
    • This study provides quantitative data on regional CSF formation.
