Patients with dry eyes (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) often show abnormal antibody levels. Testing for antinuclear antibodies and Sjögren

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Rheumatology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a common ocular condition.
    • The association between KCS and autoimmune markers requires further investigation.
    • Excluding patients with overt connective-tissue disease is crucial for understanding primary KCS-related autoimmunity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of specific autoantibodies in patients diagnosed with KCS.
    • To determine if serologic abnormalities are common in KCS patients without connective-tissue disease.
    • To assess the utility of autoantibody testing in the early diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome.

    Main Methods:

    • Screening of 32 KCS patients for antinuclear antibodies (ANA), rheumatoid factor (RF), and Sjögren's syndrome-associated autoantibodies (SS-A, SS-B).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinical evaluation to exclude patients with evidence of connective-tissue disease.
  • Statistical analysis of serologic findings in relation to KCS diagnosis.
  • Main Results:

    • High positivity rates for ANA (59%) and RF (56%) were observed in KCS patients.
    • SS-A and/or SS-B autoantibodies were detected in 31% of the patients.
    • Serologic abnormalities were prevalent even after excluding patients with connective-tissue disease.

    Conclusions:

    • Patients with KCS exhibit a high incidence of serologic abnormalities, including ANA and RF.
    • Autoantibodies SS-A and SS-B are significantly associated with KCS and may indicate primary Sjögren's syndrome.
    • Serologic testing, particularly for SS-A and SS-B, is a valuable tool for early diagnosis and identifying KCS patients at risk for systemic complications.
